Into the Wild Heart of Sri Lanka: An Unforgettable Journey Through Wilpattu National Park in 2025 Summer
There are moments in travel that etch themselves into your memory forever, and our recent expedition to Wilpattu National Park in Sri Lanka was undoubtedly one of them. As I prepare to share the incredible wildlife photographs we captured during this adventure, I'm transported back to those magical days spent in one of Asia's most pristine wilderness areas.
A Base Camp Like No Other
Our home away from home was the Epic Hotel, and what a choice it proved to be. From the moment we arrived, their exceptional service set the tone for what would become an extraordinary wildlife experience. The staff's attention to detail and genuine passion for conservation made all the difference, ensuring we were well-rested and perfectly prepared for our daily safaris into the wild.
The Thrill of the Hunt (With Cameras)
Wilpattu's vast landscapes and ancient baobab trees provided the perfect backdrop for our wildlife photography adventure. Nevertheless, we were not keen to see the trees, so we did not spot any baobab trees on our wildlife trip. Our tracking guides were nothing short of remarkable – their tireless dedication and intimate knowledge of animal behavior patterns made each game drive an education in itself. These local experts worked around the clock, reading tracks in the sand, listening to alarm calls, and positioning us for those once-in-a-lifetime shots.
Encounters That Took Our Breath Away
The star of our photographic journey was undoubtedly the elusive Sri Lankan leopard. These magnificent cats, perfectly adapted to Wilpattu's dry zone habitat, graced us with several unforgettable sightings. Each encounter felt like a privilege – watching these powerful predators move with such grace through their natural domain was absolutely mesmerizing.
But the leopards were just the beginning. Sri Lanka's position along major migratory routes blessed us with an incredible diversity of bird species. From vibrant bee-eaters to majestic eagles soaring overhead, the park came alive with wings and song. Each morning brought new species to discover and photograph.
The gentle giants of Wilpattu – the Asian elephants – provided some of our most heartwarming moments. Watching family herds interact, care for their young, and navigate the park's scattered water holes reminded us of nature's incredible intelligence and social bonds.
Perhaps most special were our encounters with Sri Lanka's endemic species – creatures found nowhere else on Earth. These unique animals represent millions of years of isolated evolution, and photographing them felt like documenting living treasures.
More Than Just Photographs
What made this trip truly memorable wasn't just the incredible wildlife sightings or the stunning photographs we captured. It was the complete experience – from Epic Hotel's warm hospitality to our guides' unwavering commitment to showing us Wilpattu's hidden secrets. Every sunrise game drive and evening safari brought new discoveries, and the passion of everyone involved made each moment more meaningful.
As you browse through the photographs that follow, I hope you can feel even a fraction of the wonder we experienced in Wilpattu. These images are more than just pictures – they're windows into one of the world's most remarkable ecosystems and testaments to the incredible wildlife that calls Sri Lanka home.

Journey Through Ancient Sri Lanka: From Sigiriya's Heights to Anuradhapura's Ruins in 2025
Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle offers travelers a remarkable journey through millennia of history, where ancient civilizations left behind archaeological treasures that continue to inspire awe today. My recent expedition through this UNESCO World Heritage region took me to four of the island's most significant sites, each telling a unique chapter of Ceylon's rich past, beginning with its most ancient secrets.
Ibbankatuwa: Unveiling Proto-Historic Mysteries
Our journey began at the Ibbankatuwa proto-historic Megalithic Burial Site, a discovery that has revolutionized our understanding of Sri Lanka's ancient civilizations. This archaeological site, dating back over 2,700 years, offers a glimpse into the island's pre-historic communities and their sophisticated burial practices - providing the perfect foundation for understanding the layers of civilization that would follow.
The megalithic burial chambers at Ibbankatuwa revealed remarkable insights into early Sri Lankan civilization. The site contains evidence of a well-organized society that existed long before the documented historical periods, with burial practices that suggest complex social hierarchies and spiritual beliefs. Archaeological excavations have uncovered pottery, tools, and ornaments that demonstrate advanced craftsmanship and trade connections extending far beyond the island's shores.
What makes Ibbankatuwa particularly significant is how it challenges our timeline of Sri Lankan civilization. The sophistication evident in the burial structures and accompanying artifacts suggests that the island hosted developed communities much earlier than previously thought. These proto-historic peoples were not merely primitive settlers but creators of a complex culture with their own artistic traditions, technological innovations, and social systems.
Starting our journey here provided crucial context for everything that followed. The site serves as the foundation stone for understanding the continuous thread of human development on the island, showing how Sri Lanka's later magnificent kingdoms built upon millennia of existing cultural sophistication.
Sigiriya: The Lion Rock Fortress
Rising majestically from the central plains, Sigiriya Lion Rock commands attention from miles away. This massive column of rock, reaching nearly 200 meters into the sky, served as both fortress and palace during the reign of King Kasyapa from 477 to 495 AD. The king's choice of this dramatic location speaks to both strategic military thinking and an almost supernatural ambition to build a palace in the clouds.
The ascent to the summit is challenging but rewarding, with ancient staircases carved directly into the rock face leading visitors through various levels of the complex. However, the true artistic treasures of Sigiriya lie not at the summit, but partway up the rock face in a protected gallery.
The Forbidden Frescoes
The Sigiriya frescoes proved to be the highlight of my visit, though they came with an unexpected restriction. These ancient paintings, depicting celestial maidens in vibrant colors that have somehow survived over 1,500 years, are protected by strict photography laws. Standing before these masterpieces, I found myself torn between respect for preservation efforts and frustration with the blanket prohibition.
While I understand the potential concerns about flash photography damaging these irreplaceable artworks, the complete ban seems overly broad. Modern professional cameras operate perfectly well without flash, and many museums worldwide have found ways to balance preservation with documentation. The colors and details of these frescoes deserve to be shared with the world, particularly given how few visitors can make the journey to see them in person.
The artistic sophistication displayed in these paintings is remarkable. The unknown artists captured not just physical beauty but genuine emotion and personality in each figure. Their technique demonstrates a mastery of color and form that rivals any classical tradition, making the photography restriction all the more poignant for those of us who appreciate both art and the technology that could help preserve and share it.
Dambulla: Cave Temples of Wonder
A stark contrast awaited at the Dambulla Cave Temple complex, where photography policies proved much more accommodating. This sacred site, with origins stretching back to the first century BCE, has undergone numerous modifications and additions throughout its long history, creating a fascinating palimpsest of Buddhist art and architecture.
The five main caves house an extraordinary collection of Buddha statues and religious paintings, accumulated over more than two millennia. Each cave tells its own story, with different periods of artistic influence visible in the varying styles of sculpture and decoration. The ability to photograph these treasures allowed for a deeper engagement with the art, providing opportunities to study details and compositions that might otherwise be missed in the dim cave lighting.
What struck me most about Dambulla was the living quality of the site. Unlike many archaeological locations that feel frozen in time, this temple complex continues to serve its original religious purpose, with monks and devotees maintaining a spiritual presence that connects the ancient past to the present day.
Anuradhapura: Echoes of an Ancient Capital
From the heights of Sigiriya, we traveled to Anuradhapura, the first capital of ancient Sri Lanka and a city that ruled for over a millennium. Our journey concluded the next day in Anuradhapura, having traced Sri Lankan civilization from its proto-historic roots through its classical flowering. The scale of this archaeological site is overwhelming – scattered across a vast area are the remains of palaces, monasteries, and stupas that once made this one of the most important cities in the ancient world.
Walking through Anuradhapura feels like stepping through layers of history. The massive dagobas (stupas) still dominate the landscape, their white-washed domes visible from great distances. The engineering required to construct these monuments without modern machinery speaks to a sophisticated understanding of architecture and logistics that challenges assumptions about ancient capabilities.
The sacred Bodhi Tree, grown from a cutting of the original tree under which Buddha achieved enlightenment, continues to draw pilgrims from around the world. This living connection to Buddhism's origins provides a profound sense of continuity that spans over 2,000 years.
Reflections on Heritage and Access
This journey through Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle raised important questions about how we balance preservation with access, and documentation with protection. Each site approached these challenges differently, from Sigiriya's strict prohibitions to Dambulla's more open policy to Anuradhapura's mixture of protected and accessible areas. The inclusion of Ibbankatuwa in our itinerary also highlighted how archaeological discoveries continue to reshape our understanding of the island's deep history.
The debate over photography restrictions reflects a broader conversation about cultural heritage in the digital age. While the primary concern must always be preservation for future generations, there's also value in making these treasures accessible to the global community through high-quality documentation and virtual experiences.
Sri Lanka's ancient sites represent not just national heritage but contributions to human civilization as a whole. The artistic achievements at Sigiriya, the spiritual continuity at Dambulla, the proto-historic insights at Ibbankatuwa, and the urban planning innovations at Anuradhapura all deserve to be celebrated, studied, and shared. Finding the right balance between protection and access remains an ongoing challenge, but one that's essential to address as these remarkable sites continue to inspire visitors from around the world.
The Cultural Triangle of Sri Lanka offers more than just sightseeing – it provides a journey through human achievement, artistic expression, and spiritual development that spans nearly three millennia. From the proto-historic burial chambers of Ibbankatuwa to the medieval masterpiece of Sigiriya, each site contributes its own chapter to this remarkable story, creating an experience that lingers long after the journey ends.

Experiencing London at Christmas: A Journey of History, Friendship, and Festive Lights (2024)
London, with its timeless charm and rich history, transforms into a magical wonderland during Christmas. My journey began with visits to the British Museum, the Natural History Museum, and the Royal Air Force Museum. The grandeur of the Great Court at the British Museum, adorned with festive decorations, was breathtaking, while the Natural History Museum’s iconic ice skating rink added a whimsical touch to the season. The Royal Air Force Museum's displays of legendary Spitfires and Lancaster bombers offered a fascinating dive into aviation history. Each stop was a perfect blend of wonder and education, and I made sure to capture countless photos of these iconic landmarks and exhibits, preserving the memories forever.
No trip is complete without reconnecting with friends, and this journey was no exception. Meeting my long-standing friends in cozy London cafés and pubs brought back cherished memories, while the city’s festive spirit added to the joy of our reunions. Together, we wandered through Hyde Park’s Winter Wonderland, snapping pictures of the sparkling lights and aromatic food stalls. Our laughter and shared stories, coupled with mugs of mulled wine, made the season feel even more magical. Strolling through Borough Market, we indulged in seasonal delicacies and captured the vibrant holiday atmosphere with our cameras.
As the days drew closer to New Year’s Eve, London’s streets came alive with dazzling lights and decorations. From Oxford Street’s glowing displays to Carnaby Street’s whimsical themes, every corner radiated holiday cheer. The highlight of the trip was the New Year’s light show by the Thames, where shimmering reflections on the river and vibrant fireworks created a breathtaking spectacle. Tired but content, I reflected on the perfect blend of culture, connection, and celebration that defined this journey. The countless photos I took serve as a reminder of the joy and warmth London offers during the Christmas season, making it a destination I’ll always treasure.

This past summer, I finally had the opportunity to embark on a month-long adventure through this stunning island nation. From the lush rainforests to the ancient temples, Sri Lanka exceeded all my expectations.
My journey began in Kitulgala, a picturesque town nestled amidst the Western Ghats. Here, I spent a few days relaxing with old friends and soaking up the serene atmosphere. Next, I ventured into Wilpattu National Park, a vast wilderness area known for its unique "willus" (natural lakes). I was fortunate enough to spot a variety of wildlife, including leopards, elephants, and a diverse array of bird species.
One of the highlights of my trip was visiting Kandy, the cultural capital of Sri Lanka. I was captivated by the sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that houses a relic of the Buddha. I also had the privilege of witnessing the Esala Perahera, a colorful festival filled with dancing, drumming, and ornate processions.
To experience the island's rich biodiversity, I headed to Sinharaja Rainforest, another UNESCO World Heritage site. Despite the heavy rainfall, I embarked on a challenging trek through the dense jungle. The vibrant flora and fauna were simply breathtaking, and I felt a deep connection to nature.
In the latter part of my trip, I explored other biodiversity hotspots in and around Colombo. I visited botanical gardens, nature reserves, and even ventured into the bustling city streets. The contrast between the serene landscapes and the vibrant urban environment was fascinating.
After a month of unforgettable experiences, it was time to say goodbye to Sri Lanka. This incredible island nation left an indelible mark on my heart, and I can't wait to return someday to explore more of its hidden gems.
